History

Montmeilleur is a fascinating ancient fortress located in the mountainous region of Le Trièves in south-eastern France, 60 km south of Grenoble. History has it that in 1460, King Louis XI made this castle his favourite hunting residence, and stayed here until 1460. Louis XI, also known as "Louis the Prudent," was the King of France from 1461 to 1483. He took over the throne after his father, Charles VII.

Much of the main building from the 1500s has survived wars, fires, neglect, and even plundering during the French Revolution. After the religious wars of the 1560s, the building's military function was no longer necessary and its defensive features were removed. Moats, girding walls, and drawbridges were replaced by terraces, gardens, and outbuildings, giving the building a more peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. However the fortress still retains some of its medieval appearance, including four remaining towers that testify to its function as a fortress.

Today the old fortress has been turned into what the French call a “Château de Plaisance”.
