Montmeilleur, in Motion

A medieval fortress turned château de plaisance, ringed by the cliffs of the Vercors and the peaks of the Écrins.

Sixty kilometres south of Grenoble, in the secluded mountain valley of Le Trièves, Montmeilleur has stood for a thousand years — fortress, royal hunting residence, and the setting of a celebrated French novel. Today it opens its towers, gardens and forty-five hectares of organic land to a handful of kindred guests at a time.

A Thousand Years

A Fortress, a King, a Novel

Raised around the year 1000 with four corner towers on a hilltop, Montmeilleur was chosen by the future King Louis XI as his preferred hunting residence in 1460 — before he was crowned. After the religious wars the old fortress softened into a château de plaisance, its moat and ramparts giving way to terraces and rose-clad towers.

“La maison désirée des montagnes.” Jean Giono — who lodged at Montmeilleur and set his 1947 novel Un roi sans divertissement here, in the amphitheatre of the Trièves.
